Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee. The regal coffees from this country are deserving of such a heritage and stand up to the calling. Referring to Ethiopia as a country of single origin, however, is misleading. Coffee beans from the different growing regions vary so incredibly that they do not even seem to be from the same plane.

This year we are proud to present this classic Yirgacheffe that was carefully watched over from seed to green bean by our friends at Cafe Imports.

This beautiful coffee is highly perfumed with bergamot, known for its use in Earl Grey tea, and has notes of lemongrass, and sweet limeade. An elegant acidity that is both floral and citrusy wakes the palate, which is then flooded with a velvety body.

All in all this makes for one of the most exciting cups we've had in years!

Importer's Notes:

""Hundreds of lots were cupped to build this Yirgacheffe container. Exporters in Ethiopia are purchasing 30 bag lots from the ECX and selected the best lots for us. We cupped this coffee three times: at our lab as an offer, in Ethiopia and at our lab as an arrival sample. The consistency between the offer and the arrival was extraordinary. This coffee reminds me what a classic Yirgacheffe should taste like.

In the aroma I found elderflower and citrus which were present in the flavor as well. The cup was sweet, tea-like, with interesting citric acidity and lemongrass flavors.

The Ethiopian Commodities Exchange (ECX) was established by the Ethiopian government in 2008 to facilitate the buying and selling of grains and to make it more efficient. At the same time the government wanted to protect the interests of small farmers. Shortly after this coffee was also introduced into the Exchange.

All coffee is to go through the ECX now unless it comes from a cooperative (such as YCFCU) or a private estate or large plantation. Most of the coffee in Ethiopia is produced by small-holders who own 0.7 hectares on average hence having to go either through the ECX or through a cooperative."" - Cafe Imports"
